As Kim Stanley Robinson says of science fiction, "Anyone can do a dystopia these days ... but utopias are hard, and important, because we need to imagine what it might be like if we did things well enough to say to our kids, we did our best...". The world is actually full of people trying to create this better vision now -- and sure enough: it's no utopia! But these experiments offer important lessons and models as we try to figure out how humanity can craft a better future.
